Cemetery of Santa Cruz

A must visit in order to understand the independence movement.

Yes its a graveyard and its very small and crowded but worth a visit to understand what happened in 1999 and how the young people would have been trapped in the cemetery. It is also important to know the history of the events leading up to the massacre, the role of the journalists and to see the video footage (if you can watch it).

Know where the grave of Sebastiao Gomes is located and take a guide with you if possible to explain the events.

The many gravestones also tell stories of occupation just by reading the dates and ages of the people buried there. What is also interesting is the large Indonesian graveyard built across the road from the Santa Cruz cemetery.
